Welcome to the Lake Nkunga Shrine. It is located in Meru County, Kenya. Ancestors of the Meru people used to visit the shrine to commune with their creator and to perform sacrifices on behalf of their communities.
The sacred lake was once surrounded by a thick forest, but not so anymore. The lower Imenti Forest is a pale shadow of its former glory.
Oftentimes, we fail to realize our impact on nature. We also ignore the obvious linkages we enjoy with nature for short-term gain. This has led to the desecration of such groves, enclaves, forest shrines, waterways, and water bodies.
The list of UNESCO-protected sites is not exhaustive but just an indicator for us to protect such natural capital. However, Lake Nkunga is now protected by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
To combat climate change, all of us need to scale up the level of restoring and protecting nature at the local level for our own sake and that of future generations.
